What is a Dog Vaccination Schedule?

A dog vaccination schedule is a preventative health plan put together by your veterinarian to protect your dog from disease based on the core (must have) and the non-core (optional lifestyle and geographic location based risks) for the state in which you live.

Core and Non-Core Vaccinations

What is a Core Vaccine?

Core vaccines (also known as the puppy shot) are recommended for all puppies and dogs with an unknown vaccination history. These diseases are deadly and common but vaccination results in relatively good protection. These include vaccines for parvo, distemper, adenovirus, and rabies. Core Vaccines are automatically included in your dog vaccination schedule.

What is a Non-Core Vaccine?

Non-core vaccines are optional vaccines that should be considered relative to the exposure risk of the animal, based on how widespread the disease is in your geographic area and the lifestyle of your pet. Several of the diseases involved are often self-limiting or respond readily to treatment and for this reason you will only include the non-core vaccines in your dog vaccination schedule for which you feel your lifestyle creates high risk.

Why Do We Vaccinate Dogs?

A lot of people are rightly concerned about their dog vaccinations and the possibility of over-vaccinating their pet (or vaccinosis ).

Veterinary medicine is still uncertain just how long vaccines last and it is suspected by many that only one injection is necessary for a lifetime immunity; trouble is, sometimes it doesn’t take.

In puppies this is common because the mother’s anti-bodies are still present in the pups system and can actually prevent the necessary immune system response in the pup. This is why a puppy vaccination schedules contain a vaccine series.

The only way to establish if your dog has immunity to certain diseases is to perform a titer test .

Titer tests can be very expensive at your local vet. Be sure to visit my page on vaccinating your puppy yourself to get cost effective options for establishing immunity and making sure your pet is protected.

The below recommendations are a combination of those made by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Canine Vaccine Task Force and individual research conducted on the geographically posed threats to each state.
